Our Story
When I was a child the most fascinating place I could go to was my father’s scenography workshop. There I could always find something new and interesting to discover. I spent hours watching those master craftsmen, and I (almost!) always found someone to share his craftsmen’s secrets. They all loved me.
Despite the fact that there was such a variety of workers (a carpenter doesn’t look like a smith, a decorator cannot be confused with an upholsterer), the way they replied to my questions oftentimes was the same: “You see? That’s how you do it!”, as if the wisdom of their hands was giant steps beyond what their words could express. Whether we were dealing with building a piece of furniture or making a sculpture or working a piece of fabric, functionality and beauty were always holding hands. Some of them used to say: “Work must get done, and done well”. I grew up in a place like that.
In College I studied industrial engineering at the Polytechnic of Milan, and during my 4th year (Engineering in Italy is a 5 year course of studies), thanks to a scholarship I got to go study in Paris for a while. I realized right away that the city was like an open-air museum, and so often times after classes I would go visit some museum and enjoy those artworks together with friends: we really needed it.
After working for years for some top notch household appliance multinational companies, coordinating some international projects, I returned to our family business about four years ago. Here, today like yesterday, we make furniture and sets for some of Italy’s most important museums, and we are honored serving at trade fair events some of the most prestigious Italian furnishing companies.
Recently, dialoguing with my father, the need has emerged to try contribute in a more direct way to the Italian craftsmanship of excellence. What we discover and live every day serving our customers, needs to be personally reworked to become even more our own. Shapes, colors, lights, materials, ambiences: everything must be understood, discovered and discovered again, lived and lived again. In this journey there’s no point of arrival. What we are interested in is being amazed, in awe in front of all the beauty that surrounds us. We can’t live without it. This is how this new adventure is born, this is how Raffaello Light is born.
